Patterns in Traditional Neighborhoods is a presentation that Lou has made to community groups, including Madison's first Neighborhoods by Design conference in 1996 and at the 1999 NUSA Conference.
It begins with a personal neighborhood mapping activity. Then it uses the two Madison sister-neighborhoods, Schenk-Atwood and Williamson-Marquette, to illustrate the design features that are characteristic of vital, mature and beautiful neighborhoods.
Borrowing and simplifying concepts from the New Urbanists and A Pattern Language, these features are presented as 'patterns' to enable residents to clearly understand how their neighborhoods can be enhanced or harmed by further development. |
