Stone and Sun
Shorewood Hills, Wisconsin
This new home on a neighborhood corner site has distant views of Lake Mendota. With energy-efficient detailing in a contemporary Prairie School-inspired design, the compact but open interior plan features abundant daylight in all rooms and many custom built-ins. The family's prudent future planning means that the home also includes a wheelchair accessible residential elevator serving all three floors of living space.
Salvaged stone, carefully removed before demolition of the small original house on the site, was integrated with new matching stone for the home's exterior.
The design of this home meant that the old house on the lot needed to be demolished. At the same time, we also happened to be working on the Madison Children's Museum. It was a moment of heart-cheering synchronicity — we arranged for the owners to generously donate the greenhouse structure on the lot to be re-used for the museum's rooftop exhibit.
