House on a Hill: Sun Tempered
Janesville, Wisconsin

A compact and functional design for a single occupant, this design was also required to be a certain minimum size by covenant restictions. This was addressed by proposing that the basement walk out space (afforded by the steep site) be considered as future living space, allowing the area and massing of the house above to be kept to a cozy minimum. South facing with a 12:12 roof pitch (that is, 45 degrees), the house provides opportunities for solar hot water panels (and future PV panels) and a cozy bedroom/ study space in the ‘attic’.

The first floor is approached with universal design principles in mind, and the guest suite is available when one-story living becomes more desirable. The screened porch and a detached garage enhance the experience of exterior space on the scenic site. Total living space: 1,125 square feet (104.5 M/sq) on the first floor, and 460 square feet (42.7 M/sq) on the second floor.
